Open Market

Brighton

This unusual development provides 87 residential units in 3 blocks up to 6 storeys high, 44 permanent market stalls, 12 light industrial/retail workshops, offices, meeting facilities and a large market square.

This is Brighton’s only covered market, and has been on this site for over 50 years. To keep the market trading during construction, a temporary market had to be built, and some of the part finished retail units were also used as temporary market stalls.

This project contains many unusual features, not least of which is the market roof. Supported on a series of steel ‘trees’ the roof structure is an unusual design, and required extensive 3D computer analysis and careful detailing to arrive at a solution that provided the required structural performance whilst remaining visually pleasing.
