St Clement’s Hospital

Bow, London

Refurbishment & New Build

The former St Clements hospital is located on the Mile End Road, East London. The development consisted of refurbishment of five existing blocks and construction of five new blocks.

The existing buildings were build being used as a psychiatric hospital by the NHS until its recent closure. The original buildings were constructed in the 1850’s and were used as a Victorian work-house. The original scheme was funded by the then equivalent of the Greater London Authority who were housed in the front block, now referred to as the John Denham Building.

The proposal was to convert the existing building into residential units with the exception of the front John Denham building which would be utilised for community use.

Walker Associates assessed the existing structure and applied current structural codes and design to ensure the functionality and longevity of the existing buildings. The existing construction was of load-bear masonry brick units, timber floors and traditional timber roof trusses also with small areas of early concrete. There was also extensive testing of the materials and loading testing to items which were difficult to assess. There was a high level of surveys undertaken and frequent interaction with the main contractor. Sections of the development were Grade II listed and well as being guided by English Heritage.
